Today I am sending just a brief note to invite you to join me online this Tuesday, June 6th for a collaborative colloquium with the Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies community on reimagining and re-enchanting education at 11am (Costa Rica/US Mountain Time) on Zoom!
I will be joined by two of my peace education students, Mili Roson and Oshan Gunathilake, and members of the HDHS community in a dialogue about educational possibilities for a more peaceful world of mutual dignity. We would love for you to join us!
We will be discussing many of the things I write about on Enchatable. If you can’t make the time, still register and a recording will be sent to you afterwards (I’ll link it here too :).
Would love to see you there!
Over here we are wrapping up academic years. UPEACE students graduate this week, and I attended my own graduation last week. The photographer caught a sweet moment of Daphne hugging me after I crossed the stage. You can read a short reflection on my Instagram post about it:
Stephanie Marie Knox Steiner on Instagram: “Closing a loop, closing a cycle 🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀 This was a big one. A new cycle has already begun, but returning to the land, taking part in the ceremony, getting to be with the people who were a part of the journey, picking up the small but weighty and significant piece of paper that I worked very hard for, was important. Because of the pandemic, I defended my dissertation on zoom, so the journey- nearly 7 years from its start to today- felt incomplete. The ceremony itself was long- it went a full hour longer than scheduled, last academic hazing ritual, we joked 😆- but I felt more excited to cross that stage than I could’ve imagined. And Daphne’s excitement (this is her hugging me after I crossed the stage) says it all (though I think she was most excited she thought the ceremony was over- it wasn’t 😆 All of that said, literally every candid shot someone got of me during the ceremony, I am laughing hysterically, so while long, it was really really full of joy and hilarity 😆 Learning is always a communal affair. It is not individual. My name is on the diploma and there are so many names I would add to it, the web of community that supported me and un/learned with me. Maybe I’ll photocopy the diploma and make an art project of it 🙂. It was so wonderful to get to walk with classmates and share the joy together, to see beloved faculty, and for Daphne and dad to be here, and dear friends who made the trip up for the special occasion! Beginnings and endings and how we mark them are important. Ceremonies and rituals and celebrations are important. And as my mom always said, if there’s a reason to celebrate, you take it. I’m so grateful I could be here. Gratitude for the learning, the unlearning, the completion of this cycle, the next chapter and lifetime which is already being written. Infinite, boundless, gratitude ❤️🙏🏻❤️”
