I am at the beach, enjoying some much-needed days of restoration after 6 intensive weeks of teaching. During this time, I am taking a social media break (a practice I highly recommend and will write about after I return), but I couldn’t wait to share with you my recommendation for the book The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin, which is accompanying me this week, and I truly could not ask for better accompaniment.
This book is deep nourishment for enchantment. It feels like Big Magic (by Elizabeth Gilbert, another one of my favorite books) meets Zen. I learned about the book through his recent interview on the On Being podcast, which I also highly recommend (which I can’t link to here because I very intentionally did not bring my computer, and adding the hyperlink isn’t working on the phone. If you Google it or go to onbeing.org you can find it!).
An excerpt I loved:
“Attuned choice by attuned choice, your entire life is a form of self-expression. You exist as a creative being in a creative universe. A singular work of art.”
-Excerpt From The Creative Act by Rick Rubin
Enjoy, and may it enrich your enchantment! And if you do check it out, please share your thoughts-feelings or how it touches you below 🙂
What are YOU reading/listening to/watching/otherwise enjoying right now that is enriching your enchantment? Please share in the comments! I would truly love to hear 😃🤩
Think to yourself:
I'm just here to create.
That's from pg 315 of the paper version. I'm tempted to tear that page out and frame it.
I just ordered Erich Fromm's book The Art of Being. It's an older book, so some of the languaging can be outdated (eg, he/man to mean all people). But it nevertheless resonates, because it essentially looks at transformation/love/collective wellbeing as forms of art. And that's my jam!
